St. Vincent De Paul College has got an excellent and fully automated library which offers a varied dimension to the learning resources. The Library's aim is to provide students with a friendly, relevant and expert service, and to equip them with the information and literacy skills to engage in a life-time of learning. The Library's role is to support learning and research by providing focused collections and assistance in the use of information resources, information services and a pleasant cum functional environment to work and study. The library conducts inter-departmental competitions for the students as an Extension Activity. The Library staffs are available to help students discover the wide range of printed and electronic resources. They assist you in the identification and collection of resources. The library staffs provide in-depth assistance to the users. The library owns a rapidly expanding collection of 15,000 volumes of books, national and international journals and e-journals relating to various disciplines. The digital library collection includes a large number of DVDs and CD-ROMs. The library has also a DELNET membership which provides immense research and resource sharing possibilities to its users. The college has a spacious and student friendly library and reading room with all the modern facilities attached to it.

Structured Library

The library has got three main sections i.e. Reference section, Stack Area and Reading Room. All the materials in the library are scientifically classified and arranged in various sections as per the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) method

Automated System

Each book is assigned a Call Number which consists of a Subject code and Access Number. Subject code is assigned to a book according to its subject matter. Faculty and students have the facility to openly access all the collections available in the library. A fully automated system keeps track of student access and use, once he/she has logged on to the system. The whole library is under the surveillance of C.C. TV Cameras.

Facilities

The library has a collection of around 5,500 books under different titles. A good majority of the books in the library are in English. There are also books in Telugu, Sanskrit and Hindi. The main areas of interest of this library are Management, Computer Science, Sociology, Social Work, Psychology, Philosophy, Religion, Political Science, Mathematics, Economics, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Banking, Law, Literature, Journalism, Multimedia and Statistics. At any time 140 members can use the reading room. Facilities are also provided in the stack room for reference.

Library - Services

  1. Circulation Service
  2. The books, back issues of journals and periodicals, CDs and DVDs are circulated among the library users. Through the open access system in the library, users can select the books of their choice and the books are issued to them at the circulation counter. Bar coding has been done to maximize the speed at the counter. The circulation includes issue, return and renewal of the materials issued.

  3. Current Awareness Service
  4. The users are provided with awareness about current developments in their subject through this service. Journals and yearbooks serve this purpose.

  5. Inter library loan services
  6. The library borrows books from other libraries all over India through DELNET and return it back after a specific time. Books which are not readily available in the market are borrowed in this manner for reference purpose. The users can get the books required using this service by a request to the Librarian.

  7. Internet services
  8. Internet facility is provided to all students through Wifi and the lab. Through this service students can access e-books and 3000 plus e-journals.

  9. Reference service
  10. A separate section for reference books is arranged in the stack area for the purpose. There are Magazines, and Dictionaries and other reference material in this section.

  11. Referral service
  12. The Library staff directs the user to the source of information if the information is not available in the library. The library staff helps to find the right information.

  13. New Arrivals Awareness Service
  14. The newly arrived books are displayed in a separate section in front of the library and also in a separate section in the stack area. A New Arrivals List are also send to the concerned department monthly.

  15. Orientation Service
  16. An orientation class to the new batch of students are given at the beginning of the course. After a short description about the rules of the library, they are taken to the library and given a detailed description about the sections in the library.

  17. Bibliographic services
  18. The bibliographic service denotes the acquisition, classification and arrangement in the shelves of a book in the library. This process helps the easy retrieval of material from the stack.

D’LINGUA – English academy

English has become the global language and people from different walks of life realize the significance of it. Most of the students are coming from the village background with a very fringe knowledge about English. The prime objective of English Training Program is to enable the students of DEPAUL to communicate in English. Students are strictly advised to speak in English and all the staffs are following the rule of language system in the campus to impart confidence in the students to speak in English. The program is being conducted in an interactive manner. The students have a lot of opportunities to interact with each other and the trainer. The activities, which are planned in advance with the help of scientific research, are interesting and exciting, allowing the students to assimilate the structures and vocabulary subconsciously. The students engage themselves in different group activities like discussions and role plays supported by creative feedback. The feedback is given only after the completion of the activity to avoid interruption from the trainer which may affect the performance. However, the trainer extends his or her helping hand, if the situation demands so, even during the activity. There are special English coaching classes in the college as well as the in the hostel for the dull students in English. Special care is taken care by the Kerala professional English trainers to have the deep knowledge about the language. Slip tests and mock drills give them a remedial bridge to overcome the initial difficulty in English.

Programme Summary

  1. Games: Certain games which would engage the students in communicating in English.
  2. Role Plays: The students are given different contexts and characters and they play their respective roles.
  3. Public Speaking: The students are trained in public speaking under the guidance of a trainer.
  4. Casual Interaction: The students are guided into practicing every day conversational language.
  5. Group discussion: The students discuss different topics to improve their interactive skills and creative thinking.
  6. Mock interviews: Mock interviews with feedback improve their ability to perform at interviews.

REGIONAL EXAMS COORDINATION CENTRE

De Paul Extension Services has been extending various humanitarian activities since its De Paul College is a centre of exams for UG courses in Eluru city. This is also the regional exams coordination centre of 23 colleges in West Godavari District. The centre appoints external invigilators for practical examination in the above colleges. All the remuneration for the examination are verified by the centre and sent to the University for reimbursing the amount. The principal of the college is the regional coordinator of these colleges and all the question papers for the practical exams are distributed from this regional centre to the respective colleges.

Red Cross society

Red Cross society was installed in De Paul College with the aim to create an awareness about the health development of the students. It conducts blood donation camps in the college and it tries to encourage the students to donate the blood and it has conducted two blood donation camps in this scholastic year and the medical team from the Good Samaritan cancer hospital came over here to collect the blood of the students. It also tries to keep the hygiene of the campus with periodical inspection.

ROTARY CLUB INTERNATIONAL

Rotary international is an international service organization whose purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service to advance goodwill and peace around the world. Since 2006, St. Vincent De Paul Degree and PG College by promoting the motto of ‘Service above self’ has conducted many programs which upholds the values of equality, fraternity and liberty in the society at large. The De Paul Rotary administration consists of a program coordinator, student leader and other associate leaders who conduct programs at different levels and at different place in and around Eluru. Some of the programs conducted are: blood donation camps, civic awareness rallies, village awareness programmes, etc.

NCC

De Paul College aims at a disciplined education for the future generation and citizens of the country. De Paul is one of the limited colleges in the locality of Eluru to have NCC programme for the students. It is open to all the aspiring students for training themselves for the service of the nation. The college NCC has produced a lot of students for military and police services. Also it has given many golden opportunities for the best skilled students on Republic and Independence Day parades at different parts of the country. It also sends students for the periodic camps at different places of the nation. The college disciplinary programmes are organized by the cadets. We conduct on every Saturdays from 2 to 5 pm parades and classes for cadets on different aspects of military trainings. The girls are encouraged to join in the same and they are given amble exposure to different modes training NSS is an Indian government sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Since the year 2006, St. Vincent De Paul Degree and PG College has been spearheading all the NSS related activities with an aim of developing the students’ personality through community service and village exposure programs. Rev. Fr. Johnny Mangalath was the pioneer of NSS in De Paul and Mr. P.G.CH.SS. Krishna was the programme officer. Mr. T. John Wesley and Mr. M. Suryanarayana were the committee members. NSS aims to instill the idea of social welfare in students and to provide service to society without bias. In doing so, volunteers learn from people in villages how to lead a good life despite of scarcity of resources. There are two types of activities conducted under its aegis: Regular activities and Annual special camp. Some of the activities conducted under it are: cleaning the streets of the city, afforestation drives, mass awareness through rallies and street shows, village education and cleanliness drives, conducting of health camps, etc.

Village development programmes

NSS organizers different awareness programmes in several villages. The programmes include distribution of toilet materials, open defecation classes, voter’s awareness rallies etc…

World Aids Day Commemoration

On 1st December NSS celebrated World Aids Day with huge rally in the city with Anti Aids Slogans, which made the people to come to an awareness of the fatality of this decease.

World Cancer Day

On February 4th under the leadership of Good Samaritan Cancer hospital at Vangayagudam, the NSS unit organized a special awareness class on cancer. A physician from the hospital was invited and he explained about the symptoms and types of cancer and students raised may questions and it was a useful programme for the students.
